no longer has a "free press"

it is dominated by multinational corporations. News and programming is
influenced by profits, corporate interests, CEO's, and directors.
News
and programming is influenced by profits, government officials, and covert
intelligence programs.
In February
2004 a study from FAIR, the national media watchdog group, found that 76
percent of all 319 news sources appearing in stories about Iraq on the
nightly network newscasts (ABC World News Tonight, CBS Evening News and NBC
Nightly News) in the month of October 2003 were current or former government
or military officials. On
February 17,
2006 former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
stated, that "in this war, some of the most critical battles may not
be fought in the mountains of Afghanistan or the streets of Iraq, but in the
newsrooms in places like New York and London and Cairo and elsewhere. [...]
As
part of George Bush's war on terrorism, the military planted
propaganda and misleading stories in the international media. A new
department was set up inside the Pentagon with the Orwellian title of the
Office of Strategic Influence.
It is well funded, is being
run by a general and its aim is to influence public opinion.

The
US government shut down nearly two dozen antiwar, anti-globalization web
sites on October 7, 2004 in an unprecedented exercise of police power
against political dissent on the Internet. The shutdown was carried
out on a US-based web-hosting company in response to an order from the FBI
requiring it to turn over two of its British servers that were hosting
dozens of Indymedia sites. The seizure appeared to be politically
timed. It came just one week before the start of the third session of
the European Social Forum (ESF), where a large gathering of antiwar and
anti-globalization activities were scheduled to take place in London.
The ESF was to be broadcast live via streaming video on many of these
Indymedia sites. The group of left-wing web sites had no links to any
form of terrorism. Indymedia was formed in 1999 and has expanded into
a worldwide network providing coverage of political activities that are
frequently blacked out by the corporate-controlled media.
In
the United States alone, AP serves 1,700 newspapers and 5,000 radio and
television stations. Add to that the more than 8,500 newspaper, radio and
television subscribers in 121 countries, and you'll have some idea of AP's
reach. More than
a billion people every day read, hear or see AP news.

Irwin
Schiff a well known author with over 500,000 books in print about the
economy and the income tax. He is also now amongst the few who have
had a book banned by the U.S. Government. In March 19, 2003, Federal
Judge Lloyd George ordered Schiff to stop selling his book "The Federal
Mafia" which has been in print for over 13 years. According to Schiff
the Federal Government is using the American people's preoccupation with the
war in Iraq as an opportunity to squelch freedom here at home.
Mr. Schiff
claims, "the 1st Amendment is designed so people can have opinions different
from the government and there is no legal basis whatsoever for banning my
book. Its all contrived, it's bull***t. The government is banning the
book because the information is accurate and correct."
On
October 16, 2004 President Bush signed into law the Global Anti-Semitism
Review Act. It establishes a special department within the U.S. State
Department to monitor global anti-Semitism. Here is a list of beliefs
or activities the U.S. government now considers anti-Semitic:
Assertions "that the Jewish community controls
government, the media, international business and the financial world" is
anti-Semitic. "Strong anti-Israel sentiment" or even just alleging
that Mossad was behind the 9/11 attack is now considered anti-Semitic.

Elton
John has said stars are scared to speak out against war in Iraq because of
"bullying tactics" used by the US government to hinder free speech.

America right now that is deadly. Everyone is too career-conscious," he told
New York magazine, Interview. Sir Elton said performers could be "frightened
by the current administration's bullying tactics".
The singer likened the
current "fear factor" to McCarthyism in the 1950s.
BAGHDAD
-- The US-sponsored Iraqi television station began broadcasts yesterday
after complaining of American censorship, including efforts to stop it from
airing passages from the Koran, the Muslim holy book. At the start of
what is being trumpeted as a new broadcasting era in a nation fed on a diet
of state propaganda, Baghdad residents with electricity saw the Iraqi flag
appear on their screens as a pan-Arab nationalist anthem played.
Deprived of any locally produced television since US troops ousted Saddam
Hussein, Iraqis watched canned interviews and decades-old music shows.
… US officials made no comment on the censorship allegations. They had
earlier said the station would be a welcome change from the Hussein era.
Clear
Channel Communications
had established a list of "songs with questionable lyrics" that stations
shouldn't play after the 9/11 attacks. Radical songs like:
Simon And
Garfunkel "Bridge Over Troubled Water", John Lennon "Imagine", Neil Diamond
"America", and Nina "99 Luft Balloons/99 Red Balloons". This was a
foul attempt to keep the American public in a "pro war" mode. Why else
would a conservative radio broadcaster disallow songs that promote peace and
love? [truly sick people].
